Historical Landmarks & Culture

Stroll through history along the historic Santa Fe Trail route that runs through the heart of town, where Victorian-era storefronts sit beside adobe buildings dating to the 1800s.

The Historic Plaza & Bridge Street

Laid out in 1835 by the town’s original 34 colonists, the Plaza remains the heart of Old Town. Bridge Street, once a working section of the Santa Fe Trail, is lined with well-preserved historic storefronts.

The Plaza Hotel — Built 1882

Known locally as the “Belle of the Southwest,” the Plaza Hotel has anchored the town square for generations and still operates as a hotel and event venue today.

Montezuma Castle & Hot Springs

A few miles northwest of downtown, the 1886 Montezuma Castle now serves as the campus of United World College. Just below it, the free, natural Montezuma Hot Springs remain open to the public year-round.

Carnegie Library & City Museums

New Mexico’s only remaining operational library of its original Carnegie-era style, plus the City of Las Vegas Museum & Rough Rider Memorial Collection and the E. Romero Fire & Acequia Museum.

Outdoor Adventure

Storrie Lake State Park

About four miles north of town, this 1,100-acre reservoir offers camping, fishing, boating, and windsurfing at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge

About six miles southeast of town, this 8,672-acre refuge is one of the top birding destinations in the state, with over 270 recorded species, an eight-mile auto tour loop, and hiking trails open to the public at no charge.

Gallinas River & Sabinoso Wilderness

The Gallinas River runs through town toward Montezuma, and the Sabinoso Wilderness — about 40 miles east — offers rugged, undeveloped backcountry hiking.
