This week’s Meadow City Weekly Review covers several significant developments affecting Las Vegas and San Miguel County.
The city’s Stage 2 Water Emergency remains the top story as officials continue enforcing mandatory conservation measures due to drought conditions, elevated wildfire danger, and continuing impacts from post-fire flooding associated with the Hermit’s Peak–Calf Canyon burn scars. Residents are encouraged to carefully follow their assigned watering schedules while temporary filtration systems are installed to improve water quality.
A second major story centers on New Mexico Highlands University, where the Fourth Judicial District Attorney and the New Mexico Department of Justice have opened a joint criminal investigation focused on allegations of fraud. The university also faces multiple civil lawsuits, and the Board of Regents recently removed President Wolf following public accusations of nepotism. The situation remains active, and additional developments are expected.
Local families should also prepare for an important educational change. Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Las Vegas City Schools will transition to a four-day instructional week operating Monday through Thursday. The district will also launch a new Pre-K program.
The community gathered over the weekend to celebrate the 138th Annual Fiestas de Las Vegas, continuing one of New Mexico’s oldest traditions. The festivities recognized Marisa Archuleta as Fiesta Reina and honored Dr. Eric Romero as Grand Marshal.
Several public works projects are also underway. Road improvements and water system maintenance continue in various parts of the city, while a major debris removal project along the Gallinas River is scheduled to improve drainage and reduce future flood risks.
Weather conditions are expected to become significantly warmer over the coming days, with temperatures climbing into the 90s. Residents are encouraged to remain hydrated, monitor local conditions, and continue conserving water during the ongoing emergency.
